Temporary Registration
Private Sale
You must have a bill of sale which lists the Year, Make, Model, serial number, purchase price and the ME number which would have been assigned to the prior owner if it was registered in the state of Maine. You will also need to know the size of the motor and length of the boat.
Excise varies depending on the age of the boat, length of the boat, and size of the motor. Sales tax is (5) five percent of the purchase price. The state fees with a milfoil sticker or without a milfoil sticker are listed below:

The agent fee is $1.00 on a renewal and $2.00 on a new registration. The complete total of the registration will be comprised on the excise, state fee, sales tax and agent fee.

Dealership Sale
You must have a bill of sale from the dealership and the sales tax form which includes the Year, Make, Model, serial number and purchase price of the boat. The fees will be comprised of the excise, state fee and agent fee.

If the registration was previously processed in the Poland Town Office the year before we will get a pre-print from the State with all of the information on it. However, if the owner has the prior year registration it is always a plus for them to bring it in with them. The fees would be computed the same as for a new registration accept there wouldn’t be any sales tax collected on a renewal. Registrations expire 12-31-2008.
Milfoil stickers are available for non-residents who have registered their boats out of state and are bringing them here to use in the State of Maine.
The fee for the milfoil sticker is $20.00
